Celadon, Copper, Chun

A glaze born a thousand years ago and loved by the affluent

Chun (or Jun) glaze was born in China over a thousand years ago. It’s a copper-based glaze that can create green, blue, purple, red, and many unbelievable colors in between, depending on how you fire it (oxidation or reduction). It was considered a great innovation in the ceramic glaze development history and was loved by the affluent people, especially the Royal because the colors it produces are often those that represent Royal Status. Therefore, there was an old Chinese saying of “A broken piece of Chun-glazed work is better than a great fortune”

After many years of experiments, I found that layering Chun with Celadon and Cobalt creates a lovely color palette that provides so much depth to the work, You get the elegant grayish blue/green from Celadon, the royal navy blue from Cobalt, and the amazing purple and red from Chun. Everything just works right in this combination.

To create more interesting effects, I usually mix a few different glazing techniques, for example, brushing, spraying, and immersing. I also like to add some gold lusters to highlight my works. All of these design elements help distinguish my works from other’s.
